Directv w/ Directivo installation options
Ok, so not that I think I've figured out all the Directv/TiVO
options/permutations (considering my lack of a landline), I think this is my best option: Take advantage of Circuit City's free 3 room installation w/ $99 DirecTivo option (w/ a $50 rebate I think?) plus whatever freebie they're throwing in that week. Their offer includes a 30-day money back guarantee in case whatever I try to get around the lack of landline problem doesn't work. I've got 3 tv's, but only 2 need to be independent (there's only 2 of us in the house), so I'll hook up the Directivo to the Widescreen HDTV in the living room and the MBR tv (w/ appropriate IR extender so the remote will work in both rooms), and the other standard receiver to the office TV. I'll "borrow" a phone line from my neighbor (w/ his permission) during initial setup, then disconnect it permanently (or until such time that I can network it into my broadband connection). Are there any better options that I'm missing? Randy S. |

Wouldn't you want a Directv HD receiver and dish? Good question. However, I personally don't feel there's enough HD content yet to justify tha added expense. Also, I definitely want the HD set to be connected to the TiVO unit, and I'm not impressed by the HD DirecTiVO's quality or price ($999!). But that's a personal preference, technically the HD-DVR allow me to use more of the capabilities of my set, you're correct. Randy S. |
I think you will need a phone line on the unit as it often makes calls for
system updates, etc. "Randy S." wrote in message ... That's good to know.

That's good to know. Thanks. Consensus that I've culled from these groups is that DirecTiVO's do *not* require regular dial-ups, only the initial setup call. It will display fault messages from time to time that are easily cleared. I'm hoping by the time it might ever be a problem due to a required software udpate or something that couldn't be provided by the satellite signal (like the program updates are), there will be a way to hook it into my broadband network without having to hack it. Well, in my case, I don't have one to hook up (unless I sneak a line over to my neigbors), since I've gone cell phone only. But if I was billu, peace of mind might be worth the $30 per month extra.
