Who Gets Called?
I have a DTV HD Tivo PVR. It is set up to call Tivo whenever it feels
like it. If I were to order PPV from Directv, would it call the same number to report the transaction, or whould it attempt to call a Directv 800 number? |

You are misinformed. A DirecTv TiVo never calls TiVo, it only calls DirecTv; It gets program updates from the satellite ~2:00 AM Jack, what happens if I get a DirecTivo and never plug it into a phone line? I presume I can't order pay-per-view directly (though I believe I could from the website), but would it activate and otherwise work normally? I'm trying to figure out if I could use the device w/out a landline (which I do not have). Randy S. |

Depending on the model and software version, it does this call anywhere from every day to about every 2 weeks. The DirecTiVo calls a DirecTV to report PPV purchases about once a month. -- Jeff Rife | SPAM bait: | http://www.nabs.net/Cartoons/Pickles/Adoration.gif

You can't do initial setup. The software version that is shipped with the DirecTiVos can't get software updates from the satellite. If you order PPV on the DirecTV website, the authorization comes over the satellite, and the billing is done directly, instead of having your unit notify DirecTV that a PPV was ordered. Note that the TiVo software will complain if it can't phone home to send anonymous viewing data, but it takes about two months before it starts. -- Jeff Rife | SPAM bait: | http://www.nabs.net/Cartoons/OverThe...ricaOnline.gif
Sorry to hijack this thread, only a couple more questions!
Jack, what happens if I get a DirecTivo and never plug it into a phone line? You can't do initial setup. The software version that is shipped with the DirecTiVos can't get software updates from the satellite. Ok, can I do the initial setup from any phone line, or does it have to be the one I order the service from? In other words, if I give them my cell phone number when I sign up for the service, can I take it into my office to set it up the first time, then take it home and use it unplugged (from the phone line) from then on? I presume I can't order pay-per-view directly (though I believe I could from the website), but would it activate and otherwise work normally? I'm trying to figure out if I could use the device w/out a landline (which I do not have). You have to have a landline to do initial setup, but, after that, you don't need one. Note that the TiVo software will complain if it can't phone home to send anonymous viewing data, but it takes about two months before it starts. I presume it's a pretty innocous error message? Are there any other things to watch out for if I want to sign up for Directivo service w/out a home landline? Thanks for the info! Randy S. |
This is false. DirecTiVos still make a daily call to TiVo, they just
don't use the daily call for programming. "Jack Zwick" wrote in message ... In article , wrote: I have a DTV HD Tivo PVR. It is set up to call Tivo whenever it feels like it. For the initial setup, you will need a phone or network connection and
you will need a satellite feed. Ever after that, you can live with only the satellite feed. I'm not certain, but I don't believe you can get all the way through the initial setup without both the satellite feed and either a network or phone connection. "Randy S." wrote in message ... So, maybe I can borrow my neighbors line for the initial call? I can easily dig up 100' of 2 pair phone line ;-). Randy S. |
