S2 TiVo hangs at "starting up" screen
This morning I turned on the TV and my 7 month old Tivo was
surprisingly at the "Please Wait, Starting Up" screen. This was odd since I ahven't changed anything on it in the last several months, and had no power failures recently. I hard rebooted it by unplugging and replugging in the power source. It just goes back to the starting up screen. Has been there about 3 hours at last count. Any suggetions? |

I'm guessing that your Harddrive is dead/broke ( indicated by a clicking sound a lot of times ) and your pretty much hosed. If you have a second Tivo, you could remove the 'bad' drive and see if it boots in your other Tivo. If so... it's not the drive but the tivo motherboard which is even worse. You can always put in a new drive ( if you can get some software on it ) if your hard drive is dead... you can't do much if it's a motherboard issue. jack |

That's a pretty good indication of a hardware failure of some sort. Commonest cause is a failed hard drive. It's also possible that some other component in the system has frotzed. Wonderful. I had the 160 hour unit and paid the $300 for a lifetime product license. I guess now that my piece of crap TiVo has only lasted 7 months, I'm SOL on the $600 for the product and service and would have to buy everything new? Well forget that; the Tivo was a nice useful product but I don't have the bucks to shell out $600 twice a year. In the garbage bin it goes, and I'll sign up for the cheap DVR service from my local cable company... and be sure to tell all my friends and coworkers not to buy a Tivo. Grumble, grumble, grumble..... |

If your system fails, and you return it to the manufacturer for repair, one of two things will happen: - If they repair it and return it to you, the lifetime service is retained. - If they declare it unrepairable, and exchange it for an equivalent unit, the lifetime service will be switched over to the replacement unit. Go to www.tivo.com, click on "What is TiVo?", "TiVo Service", then "Service FAQs" over at the right, then "What does a product lifetime service mean?", and then on the "product lifetime" description link. Also, read through the warranty information which came with your system. Note that this all requires that you go through the manufacturer's repair process. You cannot simply go out and buy a new recorder and then ask TiVo to switch the service over. Third-party repair/replacement/extended-warranty service may or may not cover a service transfer - you'd have to ask the third-party service provider about this. Grumble, grumble, grumble..... You grumble too soon, I think. TiVo's policy already covers your situation, in a way that I think you'll find to be quite equitable. -- Dave Platt AE6EO Hosting the Jade Warrior home page: http://www.radagast.org/jade-warrior I do _not_ wish to receive unsolicited commercial email, and I will boycott any company which has the gall to send me such ads! |

SINNER shaped the electrons to say:
If it walks like a troll and talks like a troll... Yeah, I was starting to think no one could be *that* stupid and irrational - but then, never underestimate the depths people can reach. :-) Cause I know if I've spent $600 on something and it fails the first thing I assume is I have no options and just need to tip the whole thing in the skip and buy a new one. -MZ, RHCE #806199299900541, ex-CISSP #3762 -- URL:mailto:megazoneatmegazone.org Gweep, Discordian, Author, Engineer, me. Excellent. I'll be glad to be rid of this POS product. I will ship as soon as I receive your $600. What payment method will you be using? If it walks like a troll and talks like a troll... If you had bothered to google my usenet history, you would have seen that I have a long history of posting and am not a troll. Additionally, I would like to point out that before I made the above referenced flippant retort, I was insulted by the jerk who pretended to be interested in buying my TiVo, and I only responded in kind. I can understand why you think I'm a troll, though: For some reason, diehard TiVo fans seem unable to comprehend that anyone, anywhere, under any circumstance, would ever be unhappy with the TiVo product. Well, I assure you, that is indeed the case. I will not be buying any more TiVos or recommending their purchase to my friends and associates, whether you can believe it or not. |

Well, I assure you, that is indeed the case. I will not be buying any more TiVos or recommending their purchase to my friends and associates, whether you can believe it or not. I do believe it, and I'm sorry to hear it. I hope that you'll acknowledge that your original belief and concern (that you were "out" the whole price of the DVR and the lifetime service) was ill-founded. I believe you mentioned that your TiVo system is about 7 months old? If so, it's still covered by part of the manufacturer's warranty - the "parts" part of the warranty is still in force, although the 90-day "labor" part has expired. You can have it repaired for the cost of shipping and labor, and your lifetime service policy *WILL* be retained on the repaired (or exchanged) unit. As to the failure itself - yes, it's most unfortunate. With any product as complex as a TiVo, there are bound to be a few units which fail during their first year or two of operation. Most such devices exhibit a "bathtub" failure curve - some units fail quite soon after they're first installed ("infant mortality"), then the failure rate drops off to a very low level for several years, and then the failure rate gradually increases as components start to wear out. It sounds as if your TiVo is one of the relatively few which failed after the "infant mortality" period, but rather sooner than the "wear-out" point (which should be quite a few years). This might indicate a defect in the drive, or might indicate that the drive was damaged during shipping or in use. Like desktop-style personal computers, a TiVo system really shouldn't be banged, dropped, or moved around with the hard drive spinning... this can "slap the heads" in the drive and cause physical damage to the mechanism. I do not recommend that you throw your TiVo system away, or sell it for a nominal fee. If you are truly dissatisfied with it, you could reclaim most of your investment in it by having it repaired by TiVo, and then selling it as an intact, working unit with lifetime service (the lifetime service is fully transferrable to a new owner). Before you do this, though, I'd suggest that you go spend some time researching the experiences of people who have spent a few months, or a year or more using the competing products on the market - i.e. the non-TiVo DVRs which are being offered by satellite and cable companies. I think you may decide to reconsider your decision to switch to a cable-company-provided "captive" DVR, after doing so. -- Dave Platt AE6EO Hosting the Jade Warrior home page: http://www.radagast.org/jade-warrior I do _not_ wish to receive unsolicited commercial email, and I will boycott any company which has the gall to send me such ads! |
