S2 TiVo hangs at "starting up" screen

This morning I turned on the TV and my 7 month old Tivo was
surprisingly at the "Please Wait, Starting Up" screen. This was odd
since I ahven't changed anything on it in the last several months,
and had no power failures recently.

I hard rebooted it by unplugging and replugging in the power source.
It just goes back to the starting up screen. Has been there about 3
hours at last count.

Any suggetions?

That's a pretty good indication of a hardware failure of some sort.
Commonest cause is a failed hard drive. It's also possible that some
other component in the system has frotzed.

If you listen real closely... do you hear a 'clicking' sound? I'm
guessing that your Harddrive is dead/broke ( indicated by a clicking
sound a lot of times ) and your pretty much hosed.

If you have a second Tivo, you could remove the 'bad' drive and see if
it boots in your other Tivo. If so... it's not the drive but the tivo
motherboard which is even worse. You can always put in a new drive (
if you can get some software on it ) if your hard drive is dead...
you can't do much if it's a motherboard issue.

Wonderful. I had the 160 hour unit and paid the $300 for a lifetime
product license. I guess now that my piece of crap TiVo has only
lasted 7 months, I'm SOL on the $600 for the product and service and
would have to buy everything new?

Well forget that; the Tivo was a nice useful product but I don't have
the bucks to shell out $600 twice a year. In the garbage bin it goes,
and I'll sign up for the cheap DVR service from my local cable
company... and be sure to tell all my friends and coworkers not to
buy a Tivo.

Grumble, grumble, grumble.....

By no means.

If your system fails, and you return it to the manufacturer for
repair, one of two things will happen:

- If they repair it and return it to you, the lifetime service is
retained.

- If they declare it unrepairable, and exchange it for an equivalent
unit, the lifetime service will be switched over to the replacement
unit.

Go to www.tivo.com, click on "What is TiVo?", "TiVo Service", then
"Service FAQs" over at the right, then "What does a product lifetime
service mean?", and then on the "product lifetime" description link.
Also, read through the warranty information which came with your
system.

Note that this all requires that you go through the manufacturer's
repair process. You cannot simply go out and buy a new recorder and
then ask TiVo to switch the service over.

Third-party repair/replacement/extended-warranty service may or may
not cover a service transfer - you'd have to ask the third-party
service provider about this.

You grumble too soon, I think. TiVo's policy already covers your
situation, in a way that I think you'll find to be quite equitable.

That's a pretty silly thing to presume.

You can have it repaired and maintain the lifetime service.

Or you can just repair it yourself, if it is the drive. Re-imaging
and/or replacing a drive is very easy. Or you can buy ready made
drives that you just drop in. Weaknees.com and PTVUpgrade.com sell
upgrade and repair kits, and PTVUpgrade.com also has the InstantCake
CD which is a bootable CD with all the tools and the image needed to
image a new drive.

If you're going to dump the unit I'll take it and even pay the
shipping. A few minutes work and I'd have another unit. :-)

If you had bothered to google my usenet history, you would have seen
that I have a long history of posting and am not a troll.
Additionally, I would like to point out that before I made the above
referenced flippant retort, I was insulted by the jerk who pretended
to be interested in buying my TiVo, and I only responded in kind.

I can understand why you think I'm a troll, though: For some reason,
diehard TiVo fans seem unable to comprehend that anyone, anywhere,
under any circumstance, would ever be unhappy with the TiVo product.
Well, I assure you, that is indeed the case. I will not be buying
any more TiVos or recommending their purchase to my friends and
associates, whether you can believe it or not.

I do believe it, and I'm sorry to hear it.

I hope that you'll acknowledge that your original belief and concern
(that you were "out" the whole price of the DVR and the lifetime
service) was ill-founded. I believe you mentioned that your TiVo
system is about 7 months old? If so, it's still covered by part of
the manufacturer's warranty - the "parts" part of the warranty is
still in force, although the 90-day "labor" part has expired. You can
have it repaired for the cost of shipping and labor, and your lifetime
service policy *WILL* be retained on the repaired (or exchanged) unit.

As to the failure itself - yes, it's most unfortunate. With any
product as complex as a TiVo, there are bound to be a few units which
fail during their first year or two of operation. Most such devices
exhibit a "bathtub" failure curve - some units fail quite soon after
they're first installed ("infant mortality"), then the failure rate
drops off to a very low level for several years, and then the failure
rate gradually increases as components start to wear out.

It sounds as if your TiVo is one of the relatively few which failed
after the "infant mortality" period, but rather sooner than the
"wear-out" point (which should be quite a few years). This might
indicate a defect in the drive, or might indicate that the drive was
damaged during shipping or in use. Like desktop-style personal
computers, a TiVo system really shouldn't be banged, dropped, or moved
around with the hard drive spinning... this can "slap the heads" in
the drive and cause physical damage to the mechanism.

I do not recommend that you throw your TiVo system away, or sell it
for a nominal fee. If you are truly dissatisfied with it, you could
reclaim most of your investment in it by having it repaired by TiVo,
and then selling it as an intact, working unit with lifetime service
(the lifetime service is fully transferrable to a new owner).

Before you do this, though, I'd suggest that you go spend some time
researching the experiences of people who have spent a few months, or
a year or more using the competing products on the market - i.e. the
non-TiVo DVRs which are being offered by satellite and cable
companies. I think you may decide to reconsider your decision to
switch to a cable-company-provided "captive" DVR, after doing so.

I can comprehend that no problem. I've seen a number of people who
don't like TiVo - you just have to read alt.video.ptv.replaytv for
that.

What I have trouble with is anyone really thinking that they need to
throw away a $600 item after 7 months because it has a problem. Never
bothering to check their warranty or investigate repair options.
That's just stupid.

And I was serious. If you're going to throw it away you'll get $0 for

can fix it and eBay it, or give it to a friend.

(E.L. Lambert) shaped the electrons to say:
I can understand why you think I'm a troll, though: For some reason,
diehard TiVo fans seem unable to comprehend that anyone, anywhere,
under any circumstance, would ever be unhappy with the TiVo product.

If you're going to throw it away you'll get $0 for
it. I'll pay you to ship it to me, plus something for your time. I
can fix it and eBay it, or give it to a friend.

(I have enough for myself already.)

Excellent. I'll be glad to be rid of this POS product. I will ship
as soon as I receive your $600. What payment method will you be
using?

If it walks like a troll and talks like a troll...

If you had bothered to google my usenet history, you would have seen
that I have a long history of posting and am not a troll.

Proves absolutely nothing. The fact that you might contribute in other
groups does not preclude you from being a troll.

Additionally, I would like to point out that before I made the above
referenced flippant retort, I was insulted by the jerk who pretended
to be interested in buying my TiVo, and I only responded in kind.

If you've been posting for as long as you claim then you probably learned
to ignore 'jerks' in the past.

You cant be serious. You were given a multitude of options which would
likely have resolved your issue to your complete satisfaction yet
instead you come into a group that contains fans of the product (go
figure with a name like alt.video.ptv.tivo) and expect any less? Do you
go into the Xbox groups and say PS2 rulez and Xflop blows and expect to
be greeted warmly?

Well, I assure you, that is indeed the case.

And you have been assured it isn't. I would bet secretly you have already
resolved the issue and are happily using your Tivo as you type yet you
aren't man/woman enough to admit you were a bit hasty in your judgment.

I will not be buying
any more TiVos or recommending their purchase to my friends and
associates, whether you can believe it or not.

Your loss. When you find a better product be sure and let us all know.

I definitely fall into the category of "Tivo Fanboy".

I do however acknowledge it's not perfect, but it's the best option for me.

E.L.

I can see why he thinks you might be a troll. I tried to email a
serious offer to you for your Tivo. However, you have an unknown
address according to earthlink.net No alternate email addresses in
any posts.

I did google your usenet history - again turning up the bad
earthlink.net address. You do have legitimate posting history.

I also noticed that in March you were talking about possibly buying "6
or 7" TiVos and sometime around April 30th your upgraded you Series 2
TiVo with another disk. It looks like earlier this year you were a
TiVo fan, sorry your opinion of the product soured.

If you are serious about selling the unit, email to:
pstryjew at att dot net

BTW a quick google groups check on my posts (from various hosts -pre
ISP days) shows usenet postings from Feb,1987 (ARPANET days!).

Troubleshooting Tivo's can be very tough on the patience factor. I
know, I almost threw mine out the window.
