Standby question
Hi all,
I'm going to be away from home for a few weeks. I have lots of regular shows I record but don't need to see while I'm gone/after I return. If I put the Tivo (It's a Hughes series I DirecTivo) into Standby does it effectively shut down and not record anything? That's what I'm looking to do. Does it also not call in and get programming updates? (Less desirable but OK if necessary) I guess the alternative would be to simply power it down and unplug it. Anyone know? Peter |

Putting a DirecTiVo in standby just blanks the video outputs and stops the recording of Live-TV. It doesn't stop any scheduled recordings, or the calls home. What you want to do can only really be accomplished by unplugging the unit. -- script language="JavaScript"// Scott Seligman for(var i=0;i73;i++)document.write(String.fromCharCode((" lsYrsiwb7pir~~|=~fr"+ (i)-("P2Y*!$1E5#()2*-"+ (i)+32));/script |

What you want to do can only really be accomplished by unplugging the unit. You can delete the Season Passes and Wishlists for the programs you don't want recorded, but leave the DVR plugged in and in Standby. The unit is designed to operate 24 hours/day. An extended power off could result in a problem when power is restored to the unit. The program guide data will continue to be updated daily and the unit will have current guide data when you return. Program Guide data comes from the satellite, not the phone calls. I'd leave the Season Passes and Wishlists as they are so programs would be available upon return. If your software is not version 3.1.0c2... it probably will be that version when you return if the phone line is left connected with DVR power on. |
Too bad there isn't a "vacation" feature that would allow you to suspend
Season Passes without deleting them. Peter "Jack Ak" wrote in message ... "Scott Seligman" wrote in message ... "Peter Newman" wrote: I'm going to be away from home for a few weeks. Peter As someone already mentioned the guide data comes from the satellite, not the phone calls. If you unplug the unit then it might take a day or two when you come back for the guide data to update. Personally I would just let it go and do it's thing. If it recorded things you don't want to watch when you get back just delete those recordings. |

For reasons too complicated to go into here, last week I had to reinstall the original 40 GB drive in one of my SAT-T60s. There were no guide data, of course. Not thirty seconds after I booted 'er up, the guide data was coming in fast and furiously. I didn't check 14 days ahead, but the present day's data were in within a couple of minutes, if that long. |

Note the time. Put the DTiVo in standby for more than a minute and turn it back on. As you rewind through the video, you should notice a gap in the video for the length of time it was in standby. -- script language="JavaScript"// Scott Seligman for(var i=0;i73;i++)document.write(String.fromCharCode((" lsYrsiwb7pir~~|=~fr"+ (i)-("P2Y*!$1E5#()2*-"+ (i)+32));/script |

Maybe not, but there are historically more disk drive failures at startup than while operating. Ask any IBM Customer Engineer. |

You can go into the ToDo list and just delete all the upcoming recordings for the next two weeks. One problem with this technique is if he does it, then it will fill up with new shows that match lower priority season passes or wishlists. As much as I realize this is against the mindset of Tivo, this actually has bitten me sometimes.. and yes, it's when my hard drive is nearly full. I sometimes will delete things on the To Do list since I know I won't have enough space.. If I do that too soon to when I leave, then something else will show up in the To Do list and record anyway. I really wish I could "lock" the To Do list, at least for the next 24 hours or so lets say. I sometimes do a minimal amount of locking by turning SP recordings (double checkmark) into single checkmark recordings, so they don't get overridden by something else. I did find something else out recently. I had thought recordings were deleted from bottom up when sorted by date. Just the other day I had something like this: Suggestion 3 Suggestion 2 Suggestion 1 and Suggestion 1 was the oldest recorded.. When I came back, only Suggestion 1 was left. I had that happen a few weeks ago to a recording of mine too.. I was previously making sure if nothing had been erased by looking at my oldest (!) recording.. But now I know I can't trust that (thought it's still at least a decent thing to check, since I obviously don't have my whole list of recordings memorized). |

Were the programs different lengths and/or quality (because it affects size on drive)? Maybe it just deleted only what was needed to make room for the new recording. Anything with a yellow exclamation mark is available for deletion. It looks like it chose to record a short recording that was enough to make room for the new recording rather than deleting more than was necessary. Just guessing here as I have never seen this happen (I don't pay attention to what suggestion is oldest). |
