Shield FX/DTVFX TiVo cockup

Neither my TiVo Series 2 nor my DirecTiVo recorded the finale last night.
After some investigation I found that the channel name had changed from
"FX" to "DTVFX" and channel 248 got deselected as a "channel I get" on the
Series 2. I re-enabled it and set up a new Season Pass on the new call
letters, but I got no message that the lineup had changed, so no warning to
do anything about this.

Fortunately there's another showing Friday, but what if somebody decides to
reverse the change Friday and screw up my recording again?

(I'm in the San Francisco market with local channels over the satellite,
and the Series 2 gets its programming over the Internet should those make
any difference.)

Jack Ak June 17th 04 02:28 AM

The local channels you receive should have no effect since FX is
not a local channel. My DirecTV DVRs both show ch 248 as FX
and not DTVFX. Looking back at last night's "The Shield" episodes
shows both hours with the same description (On Tilt), but the second hour
is identified as Season Finale. The Friday night showing has the same
description and shows an original air date of 6/15/04. If you don't
want to miss it, you should set a manual recording for that airing.

Apparently some cable companies have renamed FX to DTVFX.
Digital TV?

I don't know why you didn't have the problem, but my DirecTivo certainly
didn't record either this week or last week. I had to set them up
manually.

Yeah, this came up a while back when it first happened. It was
reported on satellite, I don't know if it is happening on cable.

Basically anyone with any Season Passes to shows on FX needs to remove
them then recreate them for the 'new' channel.

FX recently changed its designation to DTVFX for some reason, for some
reason it didn't publicize this, and for some reason DirecTV didn't
bother alerting anyone to this change even though it fubar'd Season
Passes for FX programs. Season Passes that work list FX as 248 FX.
Those that don't say merely FX. (A few of us talked about this here
and over at TiVo Community when the SPs began failing a couple of weeks
ago.)

Re-entering your Season Passes for FX will relieve you of having to set
up manual recordings. Someone else suggested leaving your old SPs in
place, in case everything changes back again.

Perhaps DirecTV can alert us about this sort of thing next time, even
though it doesn't have anything to do with Friends running overtime.

I heard that they also replay it Saturday and Sunday. So keep a close watch on
your local tv listing.

How about for this one instance set up a Manual recording?

I didn't and still don't have any Season Passes for FX. All of my
Season Passes show the channel number before the letter abbreviation,
(244 SCFI), (360 FNC), and (249 COM).

DTVFX *does not* appear in the Program guide nor on the details screen
for the Friday repeat showing of "The Shield". I selected that program
for recording to see if the channel description changes before or after
the air time. Where on a DirecTV DVR do you see DTVFX?

The online program guide at DirecTV.com shows channel 248 as FX.

Perhaps the problem was caused by the program guide provider for
standalone TiVo recorders and didn't exist on a DirecTV DVR.

As I said, I *don't* see DTVFX. No one does. I said the designation
was changed. It appears that this change was internal and
user-transparent, which is why the SPs went bad without anyone
noticing. I don't know why the designation was changed. I don't know
why we weren't notified about it. What the Guide says *now* about FX
is irrelevant.

Yes, all of my current Season Passes have channel numbers, too.
However, the Season Passes that went bad did not have accompanying
channel numbers after the FX designation was changed. They simply said
FX, not 248 FX. The 248 had been removed, as if the channel had been
taken off the lineup. The Recording History said that any scheduled
recordings on FX were no longer in the Guide. SPs for FX programs had
to be re-entered.

This happened to standalones and DTiVo users alike. I don't know what,
if anything, this had to do with cable companies, unless the change was
made for their benefit somehow.

There is more on this over at TiVo Community.

It looks like a program guide provider problem.

I noticed something like this when I switched my home TiVo system from
Dish Network to DirecTV. The network identifier for at least one
other channel (Spike TV, I think) is different, and the new one makes
reference to DTV. I had to re-do a Season Pass or two during the
changeover.

I would guess that DirecTV is carrying these channels' programming in
its original form for only part of the 24-hour transmission day, and
is substituting other shows (paid infomercials, most likely) during
the off hours. This would make it impossible for any program-guide
listing service to have a single listing for FX or Spike or etc. which
would apply to every network carrying the channel - two or more sets
of listings would be required. The simplest way for Tribune and other
companies to deal with this situation would probably be to "pretend"
that FX is, in effect, two different channels, which carry the same
programs most of the time and have the same logos and user-visible
naming structure.

That's just a guess/inference on my part, but it seems to fit what
facts I know.

I was also concerned so I set up a manual recording of the channel. Of course,
the show ran long and I lost the last minute of the season. Oh well . . .

My Windows Media Center PC, went over 5 mins. I thought that was really
cool since it never does that unless a show goes longer than its suppost to.

I'm sure Microsoft is pleased with your devotion to Windows Media Center.

Maybe the clock is running slow on your Windows Media Center PC.
That can happen when the processor is too busy.

"Everyone" doesn't include those who use TiVo DVRs. The number
of TiVo users is increasing daily.
