More programs recorded than asked for

I'm new with Tivo, so maybe I'm doing something wrong. Anyway, when I looked
at Now Playing on Tivo, there were a bunch of programs recorded that I never
asked for. When I checked with Season Pass Manager and viewed upcoming
episodes, only the requested programs were there.

Any idea what is causing the spontaneous recording?

Those are TiVo suggestions. It automatically records things based on what
it thinks you might like. The more you use the TiVo, the more accurate they
get. You can disable this feature if you want.

But, FYI, a recording you have asked to be made will never be deleted before
a suggestion due to space constraints. So at worst, having that feature
turned on will act as a free space gauge.

Thanks for thre responses. I finally found that in the manual after I sent

Perhaps recording of "suggestions" is enabled (that is the default).
You can turn it off.

For programs with closed captions, you can enable them and press the
fast-forward button once. Watch (or re-watch) a show in 50% less time.

Did the suggestion engine blow a gasket?

If the hard drive is full, your DVR won't record any suggestions.

I watch too much TV, but no one cares except my wife.

Also, if you catch it at the right (wrong?) time, it may not
have much listed. It may be indexing data to populate the
list or something like that. I hadn't reset my Thumbs database
for over a year and was shocked recently to see nothing at
all in the Suggestions list (TiVo + 8) recently. It even had
some sort of message for me about how Thumbs worked.
Shortly after, the list had a of stuff.

Probably much less than that, if you're also skipping commercials.

Though about the only show I watch almost fully in this mode is the syndicated
Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Skip past the gabbing with the contestant
most of the time (unless the CC hints at something entertaining), leave
it in 1 FF + CC.. and I usually go through the whole show in much less than
10 minutes.

Even Jeopardy only takes like 13 minutes, and that's playing it at normal
speed (except skipping gabbing with the contestants & going forward at the
first hint of commercial break/end of round).

I did the same technique with the Apprentice recap show, though from
an article on rec.arts.tv, apparently there was more new info than I
thought. So sometimes you can miss stuff, but usually I only use it if
there's an extremely long dialogue-free scene, and the CC is used only
to make sure I don't miss something.

FF + audio (at probably 1.5 - 2 X) would be great though.

Turn off TiVo's suggestions.

That's not what I'm talking about. The "TiVo's Suggestions"
screen is not the same as the bottom of the "Now Playing" screen.

TiVo Central - Pick Programs to Record - TiVo's Suggestions

That screen said "If your recorder is new, suggestions will appear
here after you've used the Thumbs-Up button".
