Tivo / DirecTv / Pioneer violate PRIVACY
I have a DirecTivo. I have my account annotated for privacy and Tivo
configured to not pass personal information. Imagine my surprise, when I get USPS junk mail today from Pioneer promoting their DVD Recorders that starts: "Thank you for watching our video presentation on the TiVo Showcase." Problems: 1. DirecTv is not supposed to pass my name to 3rd parties. 2. Tivo is not supposed to be harvesting my name. 3. I NEVER WATCHED the Pioneer TiVo Showcase. 4. Pioneer includes Rebate coupns that go to Phoenix, Arizona. That means its Continental promotions, who have an abyssmal record for fulfilling rebates. Just ask Iomega. So did Pioneer just buy my name from my Tivo dealer and lie to me? Or did Tivo or DirecTv lie to me about their privacy policy? Stay tuned for further details. |

Did you opt out of third party offering notifications as detailed in section IV of the DirecTV privacy policy? http://www.directv.com/learn/pdf/dtv...policy_eng.pdf If you asked to be placed on the "do not contact" list, your name and address may have been released before you opted out. As with most other companies you do business with, you must take action to keep your name and address from being shared with 3rd parties. |

You don't seem to be the type to ever request information from a TiVo gold-star menu entry, so perhaps you were not aware that you usually don't have to actually watch one to get literature mailed to you; one of the entries after entering the gold-star submenu is to request information -- not for viewing anything at all but a text screen. I'm not sure of the defaults on that screen, but I think it's well within the realm of possibility that someone accidentally entered this submenu and requested information without realizing it. All you have to do is click OK or something like that and you exit the menu at the same time. Maybe someone did this by accident vs. exiting the submenu by canceling it. |
