Tivo Series 2 mysteriously tuned to Discovery channel?
Hi,
I've noticed something weird. I've come home and noticed my TV tuned to Discovery Channel more than once, and I am certain I was watching another channel the night before. I have suggestions disabled at the moment, and still it happens. I don't get it. Why's it changing, and why always to Discovery? this is getting annoying, but if I knew what was going on, i'd feel at least more understanding. I sometimes use my VCR to record a program when my tivo's full, which requires i set the channel where i want it and leave it there. An hour's worth of Discovery isn't always what i want. My mom doesn't know how to turn my tv on, so I know it wasn't a human. Any ideas why this is happening? Any insight you can provide is great. Thanks, -Will |

Why's it changing, and why always to Discovery? Because TiVo buys advertising space on Discovery late at night, and tells your TiVo to record it. That's where "Yellow Star" recordings come from, as well as any clips associated with the TV Guide showcase, or any other showcases. Also, IIRC, it downloads some of the guide data from Discovery as well. Not really sure about that one. I guess they use the "extra" bandwidth in the video signal. -- Lenroc |

You have 2 options there. Buy a bigger hard drive for your TiVo (actually very easy), or find a way to wire your VCR independently of your TiVo. If you have a Cable Box, this is moderately more difficult. Actually, there are 2 other options: You _could_ hack your TiVo and use TivoWeb to delete the scheduled recordings for Discovery late-night. This wouldn't be my choice, personally ;) The other thing that _might_ work is to tune to the channel you want, then hit Pause. Tivo would fill it's buffer, then begin playing from where you paused. I am not sure if it would change the channel when it was time to record the Discovery stuff or not.... (that's why it only 'might' work). You'd have to set your VCR to start recording a half-hour later, if it did work... -- Lenroc |

Set up a 5 min daily recording on that channel and allow only one episode to be saved. That's one way to do it. |

So, he has to make the best of it. If most of his recordings are done at night, he can set it to record the 5 min segment after the last recording. Or, he can even set it multiple times during the day/daily. If the request is to set TiVo to always be on a single channel, then that is what the person has to deal with. I know of no other way to accomplish what was requested. |

I know of no other way to accomplish what was requested. Make a Season Pass for *every* show possible on the channel you want to be buffered as often as possible. This will take some time, but not that long for most channels as most have regular shows. (Won't work for movie channels, that well, for example.) Make all such Season Passes "Keep at Most 1 Episode" and at the lowest recording quality (if applicable) to keep space usage to a minimum. Also put all such Season Passes at the bottom of the Season Pass Manager. If you actually want certain shows on that channel at a higher quality or priority, go ahead. The main point is to get every show recorded automatically on said channel. This should produce the desired effect since TiVo is very often switching to this channel to record all the Season Passes. |

Exactly. Series 2 and analog cable. No DTV here.
On 2004-02-16 11:29:00 -0800, "Jack Ak" said: Hmm, where was DTV or tuner 2 mentioned in the quoted posting? The header says TiVo Series 2, not a DirecTV DVR. A DirecTV DVR uses virtual channel 100 for the nightly 2AM 30 minute recording. That channel may be mapped to channel 582. |
