Can I install this in my dtivo?
I have a Hughes 35hr HDVR2 DirecTiVo and I was wondering if I could install
a CAT5 network port in the unit. If it can be done what would I need to do to have it recognized by my PC? |

If by "CAT5 network port" you mean an Ethernet adapter, AFAIK the only way to do this with an HDVR2 is to use a USB-to-Ethernet adapter and hack the unit in a serious way. Unfortunately, this type of TiVo is the most difficult to hack. Do a Google search on "HDVR2 Ethernet" for several links, or check http://www.dealdatabase.com or http://www.tivocommunity.com and check the TiVo hacking forums. Before you get too far, though, you need to answer the "why" question. What do you hope to accomplish? Many things can be done with an Ethernet connection to a TiVo, but some things are harder than others, and some things are impractical or even impossible. Without knowing what you hope to accomplish, I can't say that going to the effort of hacking the unit will be worthwhile. For instance, scheduling programs remotely is relatively straightforward, extracting video is much harder, and using the TiVo to run [email protected] is impossible. -- Rod Smith, http://www.rodsbooks.com Author of books on Linux, FreeBSD, and networking |

If it can be done what would I need to do to have it recognized by my PC? Installing a NIC card in the unit? I don't believe it's possible, nor is it worth trying since the unit does have a pair of USB ports. However, as Rod mentioned, you will need to hack the box ... and it all depends on what you are trying to accomplish. The web interface is nice in that it allows me to see and delete hidden recordings that are coming down the line ... showcases, service data, teleworld paid programming. What i really just want to is extrat my recordings to my PC, edit out
commercilas and burn the DVD's. Some have said it can't be done on this unit but I also see the same units being sold that claim to have this capability after being "hacked" Thanks for the replies "TMC" wrote in message ... Some have said it can't be done on this unit but I also see the same units being sold that claim to have this capability after being "hacked" Yes, you can do all of that... However, It is not a simple task. For the hacking part, read Hacking TiVo by Jeff Keegan. Also, take a peek at the forums at http://www.DealDatabase.com . You should be able to get a feel of the task based on your familiarity with computers. For the editing part, you have also have a bit of work cut out for you. Both of the above sources of information listed above discuss extracting media files (especially Keegan) but you'll immediately run into the apparent inability to simply convert the DirecTV media files into something you can use in, say Adobe Preimere for instance. (I am sure to get jumped on by this comment, but one person's trivial task is another person's torturous impossibility). The easiest way by far is to do what my younger brother and I do. Hook up the A/V outputs of the TiVo to an analog capture card (we use Pinnacle hardware) and play out the show in question into your PC. Then you can edit and burn to your hearts' desire without being forced to learn how to function in a whole new world of computer technology. Remember, this is a hacking community here. A big part of the fun here is the challenge of making TiVo work the way you want it to. If Tivo thought they could make a buck (and not get their pants sued off in some fashion -- Lord knows who and why, though) by adding the features you described, they would. Ack (involved in hacking TRS-80s to make them run dial-up BBS "server" software in the late 70's) Thanks for the replies "TMC" wrote in message ...
