This is just a server replacement for the PC. It still requires that HMO be
installed on the TiVo itself. Not an option with dtivo.

Are there plans for a Directivo HMO or is not possible because of a
directv set-up?

Not any that I'm aware of. Only DirecTV would know, and so
far they haven't said they will ever incorporate it. TiVo is ready
and willing, but DirecTV is not.

I fairly certain it's possible because some hackers have hacked
their DirecTiVos for HMO, iirc. Don't hold me to that, though.

Nope, this hasn't happened yet. People have placed version 4.0 of the
OS on DirecTiVos and it works, but without having HMO enabled for that
serial number at the TiVo mothership, there seems to be no way to have
HMO working.

HMO and basic service on standalones seem to be things that just can't
be hacked easily since they require phoning home for confirmation. TiVo
service on a DirecTiVo is possible to hack because the authorization comes
from the satellite, and like all things that come from the satellite,
hacking the card does the job.

This is correct. No way to get HMO on a DTiVo as yet... apparently, you
can get it by hacking the crypto chip in the TiVo (I honestly don't even
know what that means), but then it's only authorized for 30 days...

You can emulate a TiVo mothership to work around the basic service
thing... but the HMO requires, AFAICT, an encrypted communication, meaning
that the TiVo won't listen to a fake mothership...

The TiVo needs to get a key from the mothership at least every 30 days to
unlock HMO. This prevents people who stop subscribing to TiVo from keeping
their HMO...

Hmm...so even though they pay a one-time fee for it, they don't
keep it without keeping their subscription active? Doesn't seem
that nice at first glance, but I have to run and haven't taken much
time to sort out the business model yet...what do others think?
