All major brand DVD players sold here are Region 1.

None of the major brand DVD players are zone free.
Zone free players are not really black-market items, but sometimes
is seems that way.

MANY of todays DVD players can be made region free with a simple CD image
used to flash the bios, see dvdhelp.com for more info.

True, but except if you have a multi system tv, which most people don't,
what you want is not just a zone free player, but one that's capable of
converting the PAL and SECAM video output from non region 1 discs to
NTSC so a standard American tv can display it correctly. Such players
can be had quite cheaply from Canada (less than $300 including shipping.)

You can get Apex DVD players for under $50 that can be made
Region free easily. They also have PAL/NTSC capability out of
the box. There's even a button on the remote marked P/N that
cycles through PAL/NTSC/MULTI. They don't do the best job
of converting with anamorphic discs, but are good enough for
most people who need to view DVDs from other regions.

I tried it. It wasn't that great. In my opinion, Malatas are much
better with the non NTSC output. But you're right, if you don't watch a
lot of non NTSC discs, the Apex is good enough. I have a lot of non
NTSC discs, so it wasn't good enough for me.

Of course, I also use my Malata as my only DVD player, so paying 275 I
think it was, was quite reasonable to me.

I bought two different cheap Apex DVD players. I found out after
the fact that they are easily adjusted for zone. One is zone free,
the other allows unlimited changes. I don't know about the PAL/NTSC,
but the roommate that watches the other region videos is happy.

The only complaint that I have with the Apex DVD is that it seems to be
really poor as an Audio CD player. Maybe that's true of all DVD players,
but it doesn't sound as good as a "normal" CD player.

It depends on what you want to play - my non-R1 discs are NTSC R2 from
Japan.

The Apex 600A plays PAL DVDs. For some reason, it can't adjust
anamorphic DVDs, so some shows look a bit stretched, but other than
that it's just fine.

My 600A won't play non-commercial DVDs. I assume it predates the
newer formats. Luckily, my Panasonic DMR-E80H does, so it doesn't
seem to be a problem.
