Can anyone explain this??

A friend of mine has a Series 1 SA Philips HDR 312. He has that connected to a
brand new Hughes DirecTV receiver via ONLY the RF cable. So his connections go
as follows.

LNB on the Dish to the Sat input on the DTV Receiver. Channel 4 out from the
receiver to the Ant in on the TiVo.

Somehow the TiVo is changing stations on the DTV Receiver... I dont get it. I
looked over it myself. He has no IR Blaster connected anywhere! The new
receiver does not have the serial interface so thats not it either.

How is it possible that the TiVo can control the DTV Receiver via the RF
connections?

It's not via RF. The big eye on the front of the recorder is an IR
blaster. In fact, it's the most powerful I've ever encountered. It
does an excellent job of dispersing IR in seemingly all directions
and is able to bounce a signal off walls, ceilings, whatever. Once,
I tried to temporarily disable this by taping a thick piece of paper
of the eye. After using 10-15 pieces of tape to secure the paper,
it still was able to send IR out to my cable box.

The external IR blasters TiVo includes with its recorders are for
increased reliability, but most people can probably skip them.

No wonder I've felt like someone was looking
at me. Thanks for posting that interesting
info. : -)
