Reception problems during heavy rain? by Bill Wright[_3_]
My aerial has a clear sight of Emley Moor and my distribution system normally delivers a perfect signal to all the TV sets and recorders. However, during the freakishly heavy rain in the early hours of today our reception suffered a long series of brief break-ups. This observation is based on...

Labgear Tri-Boom Mast Digital Aerial (or similar) by [email protected]
First post - I have a TV aerial that looks the same shape as the Labgear Tri-Boom Mast Digital Aerial - https://www.screwfix.com/p/labgear-tri-boom-mast-digital-aerial/60215 The topmost part of the rear reflector (?) wobbles by about 25mm as it appears to rotate at its connection point to the main...

"August" brand set-top boxes (my quest for an STB that ...) by J. P. Gilliver (John)[_2_]
(I'd have tacked this onto my previous thread but it has expired here.) I have been looking for a T2 ("HD") STB that: 1. does AD (audio description) 2. records to USB stick 3. has a SCART output with little success: the AD being the main problem - not so much that boxes don't have it, as that...

BBC solves World Cup streaming delay by Phi
BBC Research & Development said it has now managed to "eliminate" the delay. However, its software is not ready to be rolled out to the public yet. Live TV watched online is often behind by several seconds because it takes longer to reliably send video over the internet than to broadcast...

Strange behaviour of my Humax DTT box by Bill Wright[_3_]
It came on claiming that there were no programmes on the hard drive. After rebooting it appeared to work normally. It obeyed instructions and played the first of the three episodes of a programme it had recorded. However when that recording came to an end the machine switched (apparently...

T2 ("HD") set-top box wanted, which ... by J. P. Gilliver (John)[_2_]
In message , "J. P. Gilliver (John)" writes: So Brian's claim that "they all do AD" is still not proven. I still have yet to see evidence that any of these do AD - or, infuriatingly, any _real_ evidence that they don't: o August DVB415...

Dennis Norden and Frank Muir on Desert Island Discs in 1960 clip fromNewsnight Obituary by AnnieslandJohn[_2_]
Was sorry to hear about Dennis Norden - always enjoyed him on Alright on the Night. BBC2 Newsnight TX: 19.IX.2018 showed a black and white clip with Dennis Norden and Frank Muir jointly choosing their own music as they were to be marooned together on the titular Desert Island. The black and white...

More fun with subtitles by Davey
During the 1 pm news bulletin today, the BBC's subtitles included: "..during these negotiations, the Queen is a Reptile". They might not like her, but that is somewhat extreme. -- Davey.

C55 and C56 - result by Scott[_4_]
I asked some time ago whether a Group B aerial would receive these multiplexes when my main transmitter was reconfigured. Perfectly reasonably, I was advised to wait and see. I can now report that I am getting 100% quality on both, albeit lower signal than other channels. No new aerial required.

558 by Bill Wright[_3_]
The number of emails since the last clean out reached 558. That made me think back to Lazer 558. Then it struck me that I didn't know whether the 558 was metres or kHz. I mean, most times common sense will tell you, but there's this bit of the medium wave where the numbers overlap. I'm no good...

Another Panasonic TV software update! by Jeff Layman[_2_]
After nothing for 2 years, we get another one 6 weeks after the previous one, this time to "Improve network applications" whatever that means. What is a little bit annoying is that the update message suddenly appears, and you are unable to use any apps until the update has been installed -...

TV audio improvement for a slightly deaf person by Bill Wright[_3_]
I have a friend who struggles to hear the telly. She is not all that deaf but has a deaf aid. At present she has a newish flatscreen telly with very poor sound quality. I'm wondering what I can do for her. She tried a gadget she got from RNID that is supposed to feed the TV sound into the...

TV mystery by Scott[_4_]
My neighbour came up and said her TV had stopped working after the retuning day. I was sceptical that the changes would have the effect of removing all the channels, but the TV said 'no signal'. I carried out a full rescan and still got 'no signal'. I got my decoder box, plugged it in and got a...

The King's Speech picture quality by Bill Wright[_3_]
'The King's Speech' on the telly last night. The picture quality varied, in that sometimes there was an effect that showed up the most in dark areas, and at first sight looked like graininess. A close inspection showed that it was tiny white spots, ever changing. More like the old FM video...

Moonbounce by Brian Gaff
I was listening to a demo of a moonbounce radio system the other day. It was surprisingly clear. They were actually using 6Ghz. I'm very surprised somebody has not commercialised this, admittedly it would only be of use when the moon was up and would need large arrays pointing at it, they were...
